Narky Brillans - "Goes Into Orbo" (It's War Boys! Cassette, £13) 1981

It's the end of the year,so I'll do what every TV channel does and look back over the year at Die or DIY?
This time last year this blog has just been deleted by the (Ir)relevant authorities for some made up crimes against, among others, the Beatles; because one included a cover version of "I Love You" on a Stray Trolleys cassette!
The best part of a year was spent re-posting everything that was wiped, without consultation one may add, or with recourse to appeal. The inter-web my be relatively "free" but it ain't just, or secure from your own,and other countries' (USA) governments.

To celebrate(?) a year of mainly repeats, here's another repeat post, the imperious Narky Brillans 'goes into Orbo' (also known as Narki Brillans in some quarters;,but this time with a difference. Previously posted without full track editing, one has now been bothered to edit this masterpiece into its constituent tracks, and ripped it to high quality 320k mp3.
As usual with any It's War Boys release there appears to be inconsistencies with the track listing. There are seven tracks when only six are listed,so i am guessing as to which tracks are which. Checking with the vinyl re-release from a few years ago, which has eight tracks(?), i have identified one previously unlisted track,"Dave got a job in a Garage".

Here's the original review anyway:

"More looney tunes from the Homosexuals collective, this time by Narky Brillans, who created this unhinged sound collage back in 1981,again on cassette(£13 is the catalogue number not the price by the way). Brillans was a central member of that collective and this cracked 1981 side is the perfect distillation of the UK DIY aesthetic, with a series of songs, instrumentals and sound works that combine the subterranean rock style of Swell Maps with home-recorded rants, punk-pop instants, outer space drones and doomy synth. Don't know what the personnel was on this recording, but i can sense the presence of Jim Whelton, L Voag ,lurking somewhere in the background of this murky DIY concréte classic. Its very L.Voag in places, and has certain echos of the equally fantastic Gus Coma cassette(posted below,as this was also the victim of a DCMA claim, and had to be removed). These are the sound experiments that Stephen Stapleton allegedly heard to inspire his Nurse With Wound project."

An Bene / Pierre Lambow ‎– "Sustained Space" (Trance Port Tapes ‎– trance 3) 1983

The tape that gave us the title to the L.A.Mantra compilations was an Eno and Cluster inspired soft blast of droning ambient electronica. Rather pleasant it is too,and even transcends succumbing to the background music tag, which is the fate of many an ambient album."Sustained Space" managed to sustain the listener's interest level with adequate amounts of floating strangeness to stave off the boredom one usually encounters with these type of records. This is not another boring ambient drone record in other words.

Various Artists ‎–"L.A. Mantra II" (Trance Port Tapes ‎– trance 8) 1984

Afterimage (see previous post) were on "L.A.Mantra "1, so here's "L.A.Mantra II", and there's even  another Brit influenced post punk-a-like group on here, the Abecedarians (they even got signed to Factory for a short while in '86!?)
Be not afraid, for there are many other early 80's shoebox's emptying their contents onto two cassettes, for your enjoyment,or otherwise. We got minimal synth, Minimalism, avant rock, mutant disco, ambient, modern composition, avant garde, drone, and plenty of LAFMS hangers on adding their ten cents.
All in, its a great compilation of interesting musics, equal in quality to its predecessor, but in better packaging.
(Thanks go to Carlo for this by the way.

Afterimage ‎– "Anthology" (Trance Port Tapes ‎– trance 6) 1984

Doomy pop music is a rarity in the USA,except in the stagey and laughable world of metal; swamped by the ugly tide of faux optimism that every american seems to be force fed from conception to the moment they realise that its all bullshit, and you have to be connected to the Bush family to be president. Luckily they have a source of misery imported from their former colonial masters in Great Britain, who do a peerless line in moaning woe and self-pity to help counter balance the sickening "Have a nice day" fakery . No place is faker than L.A.,and remarkably there were people who understood the colloquial aural watercolours of smog ridden post-industrial Manchester of Joy Division in sunny california! Even their name is a song by dreary Northerners, Section 25, but Afterimage were some kind of rare UK post punk tribute band in the heart of Tinseltown?.......how could this be?
Remember, that the US version of UK Punk happened in California, despite the sunshine and the promise of success on every billboard. It all came from a different place to the UK. Instead of the despondency ,hopelessness, and poverty, these kids were confronted with unattainable lifestyles in a vacuous metropolis made for the uber klass. While they were stuck in forgotten blue collar ghetto's,taunted by the propaganda of the American nightmare. A very different kind of Isolation to the one Joy Division experienced, but essentially still coming from the outside. Mixed in with the claustrophobic paranoia of PiL and some whinging moaning of the Cure, and you have a very strange californian group to say the least.
Needless to say, they were met with hostility from the moronic LA club scene, which basically just wanted to "Rock out Maaan",and were not arty enough for the Los Angeles Free Music Society, so inevitably died a death before this Anthology of their few releases came out on the trendy Trance port Tapes in 1984. Twenty years later they could have been Interpol! Wrong time, wrong place, wrong haircuts!

The Die or DIY? Christmas Mixtape 2014 - "This is NOT a Love Song (22 Golden Greats for the Season We Love To Hate)" (a Die or DIY? Mixtape No.7)

"On the Twelfth Day of Christmas my Führer gave to me....
12 Dum Dum Bullets,
11 Snipers Sniping,
10 Lord Haw Haw's a raping,
9  Ladies dancing on the end of a rope,
8  Nazi Maidens a Killing,
7  SS guards a gassing,
6 Goose stepping Death Squads,
5 EXTRACTED GOLD TEETH.
4 Punishment Beatings,
3 French Collaborators,
2 Mass Graves,
And a Russian Peasant hanging in a tree."

(Traditional German Christmas Song circa 1943)

Yes, 'tis the season to be Jolly again, especially if you've spent thousands of quid on useless shit, and received piles of unwanted consumer crap in return.Eaten and drank everything that moves you nearer to an early grave with every mouthful. Watched happily as your kids are turned into the selfish greedy little consumers of the near future,as you think of the money that you borrowed to pay for it all from one of those very helpful 'pay day loans' company's at 1258%  APR.
Love and family are the themes for this time of year,as in the Love of Plasma TV's,ruining your kids, and plunging your family into debt to show them that you love them all. Its fucking insane!?
So as an anti-venom to all this fake love, we bring you 22 ditties full of(mostly) fake hate to entertain granny as you carve the Christmas capon.

Ensemble Pittoresque ‎– "For This Is Past" (Clogsontronics ‎– SG 003) 1984

A period piece of dated minimal electronica from the Flock of Seagulls/Japan type of futurism that anybody with any taste hated in 1984,but now sounds quite strange in a good way. Everything precisely sculptured and in its place with no surprises. Analogue tape had been cracked to a point of sterility, but even that sounds quaint in its misguided march to a misguided form of perfection. A sound of a time where tech began to replace effort and ingenuity with the latest labour saving devices. The only microphone used was for some dodgy vocals, and the drums were programmed on a 'drum computer'! This sound is as identifiable with 1984-86 as flanged vocals are with 1966-8. But with the distance that time gives us,one can now appreciate it as something interesting now the fog has lifte; For this is the past..

Various Artists ‎– "De Wassenaarse Slag" (Clogsontronics ‎– SG-005) 1984

From Störung's label appeared this rather good compilation, awash with very mid-1980's production values. Digital reverbs,soul-less drum machines, the odd fretless bass twanging, and singing that wouldn't have been out of place on a Classix Noveaux B-side. All this sounded very futuristic in 1984,then it didn't, now it does again,in a retro futuristic kind of way.
But, this had to be included because of the title, which is the best accidentally amusing label since The Flamingo groups classic Iron curtain pop masterpiece,"This is our Soul". Slag may mean battle in Dutch, according to Google translate, but where I come from its a woman of easy virtue and low morals. Arse is self-translatable, and wassen came out as 'washed'.So this is called "The Washed Arse Slag" as far as I can, and want to, see. No accurate translations are needed thank you Dutch persons out there.
